Tesla Model Y Battery Size (BCI Group and CCA)
The specification is not the same across every year we cover, the table below shows exactly where it changes.

Has the Tesla Model Y battery specification changed by year?
| Model years | Group size | CCA | Type | Location |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025–2025 | Group Tesla proprietary ~15.5–16V lithium-ion low-voltage battery | N/A | N/A | Low-voltage battery under front trunk area / behind front apron (Tesla service access) |
| 2020–2024 | Group 85B24LS (JIS) 12V lead-acid, early builds only; see notes | N/A | N/A | Front trunk area, under the plastic underhood apron |
Each row links to the full specification for that generation, including trim-by-trim breakdowns and the part numbers. Where engines within a generation differ, that page separates them.
Full specifications by generation
The battery on a Tesla Model Y is set by its generation, not its model year, so each generation has one page carrying the complete figures, part numbers and fitment notes for every year it covers.
Tesla Model Y battery: common questions
What size battery does a Tesla Model Y take?
- BCI group Tesla proprietary ~15.5–16V lithium-ion low-voltage battery. Group size is a physical dimension and terminal-position standard, so a battery from a different group may not clamp down or may put the terminals on the wrong side.
Where is the battery on a Tesla Model Y?
- Low-voltage battery under front trunk area / behind front apron (Tesla service access).
Does a Tesla Model Y need the battery registered after replacement?
- This is the low-voltage accessory battery, not the drive pack. 2025 Juniper builds continue the Tesla-proprietary lithium-ion low-voltage battery (later 2026-model-year builds reportedly moved to a 12.8V LFP unit). It is designed to last the life of the car, is monitored by the vehicle, and is not a DIY or parts-store replacement, Tesla service handles it. No lead-acid option exists on this generation.
