About the Tesla Model Y

The Tesla Model Y is the compact electric crossover that became the world's best-selling vehicle in 2023, and for owners it is a maintenance oddity: no oil changes, no spark plugs, no transmission service, but tires, wipers, cabin filters, and the low-voltage battery still wear out, and the tires wear fast because the car weighs about 4,400 lbs and makes instant torque. The original body (2020–2024) launched with Long Range AWD and Performance versions, added a short-lived Standard Range RWD in early 2021, a Texas-built 4680-cell Standard Range AWD in 2022–2023, and an RWD base model for 2024. Early cars (through late 2021) use a conventional 12V lead-acid battery that commonly dies in 2–4 years; later cars switched to a long-lived Tesla-proprietary ~16V lithium-ion unit.

The heavily revised 'Juniper' Model Y arrived for 2025 with new suspension, a light-bar front end, and mostly carried-over service items. Recalls have been frequent but most are over-the-air software fixes; the ones that need a shop visit are the early suspension/seat-belt/brake-caliper fastener recalls and the 2022–2023 steering-wheel fastener recall. Owners look things up here mostly for tire sizes and pressures per wheel option (19-inch Gemini, 20-inch Induction, staggered 21-inch Überturbine), 12V battery type by build date, and the two-filter cabin air filter replacement.
