Known problems with the 2025 Toyota Tacoma

3 of the 5 issues we track for the 2024–2025 generation are documented against the 2025 model year, and 3 carry a recall or service bulletin.

  • 8-speed automatic transmission failures (TSB + class action)

majorTSB T-SB-0076-24; class action filed Nov 2024; no NHTSA formal investigation opened as of Aug 2026

Early 4th-gen trucks. Gas and hybrid, have documented 8AT problems ranging from harsh engagement and failure to shift to torque-converter DTCs and complete failure/limp mode at speed. Toyota's TSB T-SB-0076-24 (Sept 2024) authorizes free transmission and torque-converter replacement under warranty for trucks built before a production change, and a nationwide class action was filed in Nov 2024. If you feel slipping, flare, or clunks, document it and get the TSB applied while under the 5-yr/60k powertrain warranty.

Typical cost: Free under powertrain warranty per TSB; a replacement transmission runs several thousand dollars out of warranty

  • Front driveshaft CV joint can break (recall, 2025)

    majorNHTSA 25V-656

On certain 2025 4WD trucks the front driveshaft's CV joint can deform and eventually break, which can cause loss of drive power or, combined with parking without the parking brake, a rollaway. Toyota recalls and replaces the front driveshaft assembly free.

    Typical cost: Free under recall

  • Instrument panel may not display speed/warnings (recall, software)

    moderateNHTSA 25V-595

A software defect can leave the combination meter blank or missing the speedometer, brake, and TPMS warnings at startup. Fixed by an over-the-air or dealer software update, free. Hybrid clusters on some trucks also needed a hardware inspection.

Typical cost: Free under recall (software update)

About the Toyota Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma has been America's best-selling midsize pickup for two decades, and the 2012–2025 span covers three mechanically distinct trucks. 0L 1GR-FE V6 with old-school 4- and 5-speed automatics and a 5,000-mile oil interval. 4B settlement.

5L 2GR-FKS with an Atkinson-capable direct+port injection system, a 6-speed automatic that generated years of shift-quality complaints and TSB reflashes, 0W-20 oil on a 10,000-mile interval, and two early recalls (rear differential leak, crank sensor stalling). 4L i-FORCE turbo four, alone or as the 326-hp i-FORCE MAX hybrid, through an 8-speed automatic whose early failures triggered a warranty TSB and a class action. 2 gal on the 4th gen), a body-on-frame chassis that owners keep well past 200k miles, and heavy owner traffic around oil capacity (it changed every generation), tire sizes that differ by trim, and recall lookups.
