Has the Ram 1500 oil specification changed by year?
| Model years | Viscosity | Capacity | OEM filter | Interval |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2019–2025 | 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-40, 0W-40 | 5 / 7 / 8.5 / 7.5 qt | Mopar 68191349AA (MO-349, cartridge) | Follow oil-change indicator; 10,000 mi / 12 months max; 4,000–5,000 mi severe |
| 2012–2018 | 5W-20, 5W-40 | 5 / 6 / 5.9 / 7 / 10.5 qt | Mopar 05281090AB (MO-090, spin-on) | Follow oil-change indicator; 8,000 mi / 12 months max (2012 schedule); 4,000 mi severe |
Each row links to the full specification for that generation, including trim-by-trim breakdowns and the part numbers. Where engines within a generation differ, that page separates them.
Full specifications by generation
The oil on a Ram 1500 is set by its generation, not its model year, so each generation has one page carrying the complete figures, part numbers and fitment notes for every year it covers.
Ram 1500 oil: common questions
How many quarts of oil does a Ram 1500 take?
- It depends on the engine. The 3.6L Pentastar V6 eTorque (48V mild hybrid) takes 5 quarts; The 5.7L HEMI V8 (2019–2024, with or without eTorque) takes 7 quarts; The 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 gen 3 (2020–2023) takes 8.5 quarts; The 6.2L Supercharged HEMI V8 (TRX, 2021–2024) takes 7.5 quarts; The 3.0L Hurricane SST I6 twin-turbo, Standard Output (2025–) takes 7.5 quarts; The 3.0L Hurricane SST I6 twin-turbo, High Output (2025–) takes 7.5 quarts, all figures include a new filter.
What kind of oil does a Ram 1500 take?
- 0W-20 meeting API SN Plus/SP / FCA MS-6395, full synthetic (required, not merely recommended). Other engines in this vehicle may differ; see the table above.
Can you use a different viscosity in a Ram 1500?
- The factory specification is 0W-20 and no alternate grade is listed for this engine. Modern variable-valve-timing hardware is sized around the specified viscosity, so substituting a thicker oil is not a free choice.
How often does a Ram 1500 need an oil change?
- Follow oil-change indicator; 10,000 mi / 12 months max; 4,000–5,000 mi severe. Short trips, towing, extended idling, and dusty or very cold conditions all put the vehicle on the severe-service side of that interval.
What oil filter does a Ram 1500 take?
- The OEM filter is Mopar 68191349AA (MO-349, cartridge). Common equivalents: Wix 57526, Fram XG11665 (Ultra).
