Has the Hyundai Elantra battery specification changed by year?
| Model years | Group size | CCA | Type | Location |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021–2025 | Group 35 (gas trims); H5 AGM on trims with idle Stop & Go | 500 CCA | FLOODED | Engine bay, driver side (gas); trunk (hybrid) |
| 2017–2020 | Group 35 (H5/47 on some idle-stop-and-go-equipped trims) | 500 CCA | FLOODED | Engine bay, driver side |
| 2012–2016 | Group 35 | 500 CCA | FLOODED | Engine bay, driver side |
Each row links to the full specification for that generation, including trim-by-trim breakdowns and the part numbers. Where engines within a generation differ, that page separates them.
Full specifications by generation
The battery on a Hyundai Elantra is set by its generation, not its model year, so each generation has one page carrying the complete figures, part numbers and fitment notes for every year it covers.

Hyundai Elantra battery: common questions
What size battery does a Hyundai Elantra take?
- BCI group 35 (gas trims); H5 AGM on trims with idle Stop & Go, rated at 500 cold cranking amps from the factory. Group size is a physical dimension and terminal-position standard, so a battery from a different group may not clamp down or may put the terminals on the wrong side.
How many CCA does a Hyundai Elantra need?
- At least 500 CCA. Going higher is harmless and helps in cold climates; going lower is how a vehicle that started fine in October stops starting in January.
Does the Hyundai Elantra need an AGM battery?
- The factory battery is a conventional flooded type. AGM is a valid upgrade, but never downgrade from AGM to flooded.
Where is the battery on a Hyundai Elantra?
- Engine bay, driver side (gas); trunk (hybrid).
Does a Hyundai Elantra need the battery registered after replacement?
- Base gas trims use a flooded Group 35 battery. Trims equipped with Hyundai's idle Stop & Go feature require an AGM (commonly a Group H5) to survive the frequent stop/restart cycling. Check your trim before replacing with flooded. Hybrid uses a separate trunk-mounted 12V AGM (see hybrid engine entry).
