Tesla Model 3 Battery Size (BCI Group and CCA)
The specification is not the same across every year we cover, the table below shows exactly where it changes.

Has the Tesla Model 3 battery specification changed by year?
| Model years | Group size | CCA | Type | Location |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024–2025 | Group 16V Li-ion low-voltage battery (Tesla proprietary, 15.5 V / 6.9 Ah) | N/A | N/A | Front compartment, behind the cabin-intake trim panel |
| 2017–2023 | Group 85B24LS (JIS; 12V 45 Ah) through ~Nov 2021 production; 16V Li-ion after | N/A | FLOODED | Front compartment, behind the cabin-intake trim panel at the base of the windshield |
Each row links to the full specification for that generation, including trim-by-trim breakdowns and the part numbers. Where engines within a generation differ, that page separates them.
Full specifications by generation
The battery on a Tesla Model 3 is set by its generation, not its model year, so each generation has one page carrying the complete figures, part numbers and fitment notes for every year it covers.
Tesla Model 3 battery: common questions
What size battery does a Tesla Model 3 take?
- BCI group 16V Li-ion low-voltage battery (Tesla proprietary, 15.5 V / 6.9 Ah). Group size is a physical dimension and terminal-position standard, so a battery from a different group may not clamp down or may put the terminals on the wrong side.
Where is the battery on a Tesla Model 3?
- Front compartment, behind the cabin-intake trim panel.
Does a Tesla Model 3 need the battery registered after replacement?
- All Highland cars use the 16V Li-ion low-voltage battery (CATL prismatic cells), no lead-acid option, no BCI group size, and Tesla says it is designed to last the life of the vehicle. Not a routine wear item; replacement is by Tesla (mobile) service. The high-voltage traction pack is separate.
