VTC actuator rattle at cold start
minorHonda TSB A18-010 and related bulletinsA 1–3 second grinding rattle at cold start on the 2.4L is the K24's well-known VTC (variable timing control) actuator lock-pin not holding. It is annoying more than destructive, but Honda revised the actuator and covered many replacements under TSBs. Fix is a new actuator. Labor-heavy because the timing chain must come off.
Typical cost: $600–$1,100 out of warranty
Hybrid: dead 12V auxiliary battery strands the car
minorThe small trunk-area 12V battery on Accord Hybrids commonly dies around the 4–5 year mark, and the car will not 'READY' even though the high-voltage pack is fine, symptoms look like total electrical failure. Jump-starting at the under-hood jump terminal wakes it up; the cure is a new AGM battery of the same size. Keep the 12V tested after year three.
Typical cost: $180–$320

About the Honda Accord
The Honda Accord is the Camry's perennial rival, and the 2013–2025 span covers three mechanically distinct cars that share Honda's reputation for long engine life and cheap consumables. 5L J35Y1 V6, the last Accord V6, and the only engine here with a timing belt to replace, plus a two-motor i-MMD hybrid in 2014–2015 and 2017; its documented weak spots are torque-converter judder in the CVT, grinding starters, and rattling VTC actuators. 0T with a 10-speed automatic, and a stronger hybrid, plus a big Denso fuel-pump recall and a 10-year warranty extension on leak-prone A/C condensers.
0L hybrid the volume powertrain; a quarter-million 2023–2025 hybrids were recalled in late 2025 for control-module software that can cut drive power. 3 with 80 ft-lb lug torque, key fobs take a CR2032, and there is no fixed service schedule, the Maintenance Minder computes oil life and flags codes for filters, fluids, and plugs.
