Reset procedure, 2013–2018 Toyota RAV4
High confidence- Turn the ignition to ON (push-button cars: press START twice without touching the brake) and press the trip-stalk/DISP button until the plain odometer (ODO) is displayed, not Trip A or Trip B
- Turn the ignition OFF
- Press and hold the trip/ODO button, and while holding it, turn the ignition back to ON (do not start the engine)
- Keep holding (~5–10 seconds): the display shows dashes, then zeros, then the normal odometer reading
- Release the button, the MAINT REQD light is reset
Classic Toyota trip-meter hold method; the light is a 5,000-mile mileage counter, not an oil-condition sensor. If the reset fails, confirm the display was on ODO before switching off. Works on all XA40 trims including hybrids.

2013–2018 Toyota RAV4 oil life reset: common questions
How do you reset the oil life on a 2013–2018 Toyota RAV4?
- 5 steps, using only the controls in the car, the full sequence is above.
Do you need a scan tool to reset the oil light on a 2013–2018 Toyota RAV4?
- No. The procedure above uses the vehicle's own controls. A scan tool is only necessary if the reset does not take, which usually points at a different fault.
Why won't the oil light reset on a 2013–2018 Toyota RAV4?
- Almost always a timing problem in the sequence, a step held too briefly, or the ignition in the wrong position. Repeat it exactly, with the engine off and the key in accessory rather than run, unless the steps say otherwise. Classic Toyota trip-meter hold method; the light is a 5,000-mile mileage counter, not an oil-condition sensor. If the reset fails, confirm the display was on ODO before switching off.
