Known problems with the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox

2 of the 6 issues we track for the 2018–2024 generation are documented against the 2022 model year.

  • Turbocharger failure (often oil-starvation related)

    major

Turbo failures on the 1.5T, whining/grinding, loss of power, blue exhaust smoke, are commonly a downstream casualty of the oil consumption problem or oil-feed line coking. Oil pushed past turbo seals also mimics a failed turbo. Keep oil full and fresh; replace the feed line with the turbo.

Typical cost: $1,500–$2,800 parts and labor

  • Brake vacuum pump failure ("Service Brake Assist" message)

    major

The 1.5T uses a cam-driven mechanical vacuum pump for brake assist. It wears or seizes, triggering a hard brake pedal with a "Service Brake Assist" message, and in the worst cases the pump's drive gear breaks and sheds debris into the cylinder head. Well documented across 2018–2022; replace promptly at the first warning.

Typical cost: $400–$900 (pump); far more if debris damages the head

About the Chevrolet Equinox

The Chevrolet Equinox is GM's best-selling crossover, and the 2012–2025 span covers three distinct vehicles with very different reputations. 6L from 2013) avoid that problem but drink more fuel. 5T has its own documented oil-consumption and turbocharger complaints plus a failure-prone mechanical brake-vacuum pump, so checking the dipstick between changes remains an Equinox ownership ritual.

5L turbo with a CVT (FWD) or 8-speed automatic (AWD). Across all years the key points owners look up are simple: dexos1-licensed oil (5W-30 on the older engines, 0W-20 on the turbos), Group 47/48 batteries (AGM once stop/start arrived in 2018), 140 lb-ft lug torque, and a CR2032 fob battery until the 2025 redesign switched to CR2450. Note the bolt pattern changes by generation: 5x120 (2010–2017) to 5x115 (2018 on).
