Reset procedure, 2012 Nissan Altima

Check your manual
  1. Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine
  2. Using the two small buttons on the instrument cluster (overlapping-squares = ENTER, circle = NEXT), press ENTER repeatedly until the display shows SETTING mode
  3. Press NEXT to open the SETTINGS menu, then navigate until "Maintenance" is highlighted and press ENTER
  4. Press NEXT to highlight the item to reset, ENGINE OIL, OIL FILTER, or TIRE, and press ENTER
  5. Highlight RESET with the NEXT button and press ENTER; the mileage counter returns to zero
  6. Repeat for OIL FILTER if you also changed the filter. It is tracked separately

The reminder is a settable mileage countdown, not an oil-life sensor, and it is off by default from the factory. Many 2012 Altimas never had it enabled. Same procedure covers the tire-rotation reminder.

Which Nissan Altima model years does this cover?

2012 Nissan Altima oil life reset: common questions

How do you reset the oil life on a 2012 Nissan Altima?

6 steps, using only the controls in the car, the full sequence is above.

Do you need a scan tool to reset the oil light on a 2012 Nissan Altima?

No. The procedure above uses the vehicle's own controls. A scan tool is only necessary if the reset does not take, which usually points at a different fault.

Why won't the oil light reset on a 2012 Nissan Altima?

Almost always a timing problem in the sequence, a step held too briefly, or the ignition in the wrong position. Repeat it exactly, with the engine off and the key in accessory rather than run, unless the steps say otherwise. The reminder is a settable mileage countdown, not an oil-life sensor, and it is off by default from the factory. Many 2012 Altimas never had it enabled. Same procedure covers the tire-rotation reminder.
