Known problems with the 2014 Hyundai Sonata
3 of the 4 issues we track for the 2011–2014 generation are documented against the 2014 model year, and 2 carry a recall or service bulletin.
Expanded Theta II recall, Knock Sensor Detection System, and lifetime engine warranty
majorNHTSA 17V-226; Service Campaign 966 (KSDS); Nov. 2020 NHTSA consent orderThe 2015 recall proved too narrow to catch every affected engine, so Hyundai issued a second, broader Theta II campaign (17V-226) covering more 2011–2014 Sonatas, followed by a Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software update (Service Campaign 966) that continuously monitors engine vibration for the same abnormal rod-bearing wear pattern and warns the driver before a seizure happens. After a November 2020 NHTSA consent order found Hyundai (and Kia) had run untimely recalls and misreported data, Hyundai extended a lifetime engine-replacement warranty to affected owners, but eligibility generally requires the KSDS update to be installed first, and owners report denials when it isn't on file.
Typical cost: Free, KSDS install (Campaign 966), then lifetime short-block/engine coverage if the knock condition is later detected
ABS module electrical short, engine-bay fire risk (Sonata Hybrid, recall)
majorNHTSA 23V-651000On roughly 83,000 model-year 2011–2015 Sonata Hybrids, the ABS hydraulic control module (HECU) can develop an internal electrical short that increases the risk of an engine-compartment fire, whether the car is being driven, parked, or even turned off. Hyundai told owners to park outside and away from structures until the free dealer repair was completed as part of a wider, multi-nameplate 2023 Hyundai/Kia fire-risk recall.
Typical cost: Free under recall
2.0T premature cylinder/piston wear
moderateSeparate from the connecting-rod-bearing recalls above, the turbocharged 2.0T Theta II has its own history of owner-reported premature wear, scored cylinder walls and damaged pistons in a subset of engines, often attributed to fuel washing down the cylinder walls on cold starts and short trips. There is no dedicated NHTSA recall for this pattern, and owners report mixed results getting it covered under the Theta II extended warranty.
Typical cost: $5,000+ for a short block or engine replacement out of warranty

About the Hyundai Sonata
The Hyundai Sonata is the brand's midsize sedan and, for much of the 2011–2025 span covered here, a cautionary tale about engine manufacturing quality alongside genuinely good value. 0T GDI engines are the center of Hyundai's biggest-ever US recall saga: manufacturing debris left in connecting-rod oil passages caused a wave of engine seizures and fires, triggering two NHTSA recalls (15V-568, then the broader 17V-226), a Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software campaign, and, after a November 2020 NHTSA consent order found Hyundai and Kia had moved too slowly and misreported data, a lifetime engine warranty extension for affected owners who install the KSDS update. The same generation's Sonata Hybrid was separately recalled (23V-651) for an ABS module that could short-circuit and start an engine-bay fire, with owners told to park outside.
0L hybrid/PHEV; Theta-family warranty coverage extends into its early years. 0L) shared with the Sonata Hybrid/Hybrid Limited. 3. Because of the recall history, checking a Sonata's VIN against NHTSA and Hyundai's recall lookup before buying or servicing one is more important here than on almost any other nameplate in this database.
