--- title: "Toyota Tacoma Oil Type: 0W-20, 5.9 qt" description: "How the Toyota Tacoma oil specification changed from 2012 to 2025, compared generation by generation. The Toyota Tacoma takes 0W-20 engine oil, 5.9 quarts with a filter change by engine. OEM filter Toyota 04152-YZZA1 (cartridge). Verified against factory documentation, with change intervals and aftermarket filter equivalents." url: "https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/oil" updated: "2026-08-20" --- # Toyota Tacoma Oil Type and Capacity The specification is not the same across every year we cover, the table below shows exactly where it changes. ## Has the Toyota Tacoma oil specification changed by year? | Model years | Viscosity | Capacity | OEM filter | Interval | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | [2024-2025](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2024-2025/oil) | 0W-20 | 5.9 qt | Toyota 04152-YZZA1 (cartridge) | 10,000 mi / 12 months (normal); 5,000 mi / 6 months (severe service) | | [2016-2023](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2016-2023/oil) | 0W-20 | 6.2 / 6.1 qt | Toyota 90915-YZZG1 (spin-on; 90915-YZZG2/YZZD1 supersessions) | 10,000 mi / 12 months (normal); 5,000 mi / 6 months (severe service) | | [2012-2015](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2012-2015/oil) | 0W-20, 5W-30 | 6.1 / 5.5 qt | Toyota 90915-YZZG1 (spin-on; superseded to 90915-YZZG2, currently 90915-YZZD1) | 5,000 mi / 6 months, even with 0W-20. Toyota only grants the 10,000-mile interval to engines that require 0W-20; this one merely recommends it. | ## Full specifications by generation The oil on a Toyota Tacoma is set by its generation, not its model year, so each generation has one page carrying the complete figures, part numbers and fitment notes for every year it covers. - [2024-2025 Toyota Tacoma Oil & filter](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2024-2025/oil) - [2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma Oil & filter](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2016-2023/oil) - [2012-2015 Toyota Tacoma Oil & filter](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2012-2015/oil) ## Toyota Tacoma oil: common questions ### How many quarts of oil does a Toyota Tacoma take? It depends on the engine. The 2.4L i-FORCE turbo (T24A-FTS) takes 5.9 quarts; The 2.4L i-FORCE MAX hybrid (T24A-FTS + 48-hp motor) takes 5.9 quarts, all figures include a new filter. ### What kind of oil does a Toyota Tacoma take? 0W-20 meeting API SP / ILSAC GF-6A, full synthetic (required, not merely recommended). Other engines in this vehicle may differ; see the table above. ### Can you use a different viscosity in a Toyota Tacoma? The manufacturer also permits 5W-20 (May be used if 0W-20 is unavailable; replace with 0W-20 at the next change). Anything outside that list is a decision you are making against the factory specification. ### How often does a Toyota Tacoma need an oil change? 10,000 mi / 12 months (normal); 5,000 mi / 6 months (severe service). Short trips, towing, extended idling, and dusty or very cold conditions all put the vehicle on the severe-service side of that interval. ### What oil filter does a Toyota Tacoma take? The OEM filter is Toyota 04152-YZZA1 (cartridge). Common equivalents: Fram CH10358, Wix 57047, Denso 150-3051. Torque the drain plug to 30 lb-ft. An overtightened plug strips an aluminium pan. ## Sources - [Toyota USA Newsroom, 2024 Tacoma reveal (powertrains, towing, payload)](https://pressroom.toyota.com/2024-toyota-tacoma-is-the-ultimate-adventure-machine/) - [Toyota USA Newsroom, 2024 Tacoma i-FORCE MAX](https://pressroom.toyota.com/legendary-performance-modern-power-2024-toyota-tacoma-with-i-force-max/) - [2024 Tacoma owner's-manual fluid specs writeup (autoevolution)](https://www.autoevolution.com/news/2024-toyota-tacoma-24l-i4-uses-0w-20-engine-oil-8-speed-auto-takes-ws-transmission-fluid-226181.html) - [AMSOIL product lookup, 2024 Tacoma T24A-FTS capacities](https://www.amsoil.com/lookup/auto-and-light-truck/2024/toyota/tacoma/2-4l-4-cyl-engine-code-t24a-fts-a-turbo/) - [CarComplaints, T-SB-0076-24 Tacoma transmission TSB coverage](https://m.carcomplaints.com/news/2024/toyota-tacoma-transmission-problems-t-sb-0076-24.shtml) - [NHTSA recall lookup, 2024-2025 Tacoma (25V-058, 25V-595, 25V-656, 26V-514)](https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls) - [Wheel-Size.com, 2024 Tacoma OE fitments](https://www.wheel-size.com/size/toyota/tacoma/2024/) - [fueleconomy.gov, 2024 Tacoma EPA ratings](https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymodel/2024_Toyota_Tacoma.shtml) - [4GTaco, owner's-manual 12V battery spec and lug torque threads](https://4gtaco.com/threads/2024-4th-gen-tacoma-12v-battery-maintenance.1383/) ## Find your exact Tacoma - [2025](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2025) - [2024](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2024) - [2023](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2023) - [2022](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2022) - [2021](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2021) - [2020](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2020) - [2019](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2019) - [2018](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2018) - [2017](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2017) - [2016](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2016) - [2015](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2015) - [2014](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2014) - [2013](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2013) - [2012](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/2012) More Toyota Tacoma guides: - [Battery](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/battery) - [Tires & wheels](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/tires) - [Wiper blades](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/wipers) - [Air & cabin filters](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/filters) - [Bulbs](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/bulbs) - [Brakes](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/brakes) - [Fluids](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/fluids) - [Service schedule](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/service-schedule) - [Problems & reliability](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/common-problems) - [Oil light reset](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/oil-reset) - [Key fob battery](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/key-fob-battery) - [Specs](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/tacoma/specs) Specifications vary with engine option, production date, and market.
