The recurring ones are: denso low-pressure fuel pump failure (recall); coolant bypass valve (flow shut-off valve) leak; 8-speed transmission hesitation / harsh low-speed shifts; hybrid fuel tank won't take a full fill; 12v battery drain / dead overnight. Each is detailed above with symptoms, affected years, and typical cost. ### Which Toyota RAV4 years should you avoid? The years to be most careful with are those affected by denso low-pressure fuel pump failure (recall) (2019-2020). A documented problem is not automatically a reason to walk away. Service records showing the repair was done change the picture entirely. ### Are there recalls on the Toyota RAV4? 3 of the issues listed carry a recall or technical service bulletin: NHTSA 20V-012 / 20V-682 (Toyota 20TA02) (denso low-pressure fuel pump failure (recall)), Toyota Customer Support Program 24TE04 (coolant bypass valve (flow shut-off valve) leak), Multiple shift-quality TSBs (ECM/TCM recalibration) (8-speed transmission hesitation / harsh low-speed shifts). Recall work is free at a franchised dealer regardless of age or mileage. Check your VIN on the NHTSA site to see what is outstanding. ### How much do Toyota RAV4 repairs typically cost? Typical figures for the issues above: denso low-pressure fuel pump failure (recall), Free under recall; ~$500-$900 if a failed pump is replaced outside recall scope; coolant bypass valve (flow shut-off valve) leak, Free under CSP 24TE04; $450-$1,000 otherwise; 8-speed transmission hesitation / harsh low-speed shifts, Free (TSB reflash) under warranty; hybrid fuel tank won't take a full fill, Free under warranty/goodwill where applicable. ## Sources - [Toyota technical data, RAV4 XA50 fluids & capacities (toyota-club.net)](https://toyota-club.net/files/techdata/ttx/rav4_50u.htm) - [Toyota of Glendale, RAV4 oil type & capacity guide 2013-2026](https://www.toyotaofglendale.com/service/service-parts-tips/rav4-oil-type-capacity/) - [NHTSA recall 20V-682, Denso fuel pump (Part 573 report, includes 2019-2020 RAV4)](https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2020/RCLRPT-20V682-3280.PDF) - [Toyota safety recall 20TA02, fuel pump campaign details (oemdtc)](https://toyota.oemdtc.com/822/safety-recall-20ta02-vehicle-may-stall-during-driving-at-higher-speed-2014-2020-toyota) - [Toyota Customer Support Program 24TE04, flow shut-off valve (coolant bypass) coverage](https://www.toyotanation.com/threads/new-customer-support-program-for-coolant-bypass-valve.1792452/) - [Toyota parts, 17801-F0050 engine air filter (oempartsonline)](https://toyota.oempartsonline.com/oem-parts/toyota-air-filter-17801f0050) - [RAV4World / ToyotaNation, XA50 12V battery sizes (H5 2019-2020, H6 2021+, hybrid LN1)](https://www.rav4world.com/threads/12-volt-battery-replacement.341237/) - [Goodyear fitment, 2021 RAV4 tire sizes by trim](https://www.goodyear.com/en-us/vehicles/Toyota/RAV4/2021) - [TirePressure.org, 2021 Toyota RAV4 placard pressures](https://tirepressure.org/toyota/rav4/2021) - [fueleconomy.gov, 2021 RAV4 / RAV4 Prime EPA ratings](https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymodel/2021_Toyota_RAV4.shtml) - [XenonPro, 2019-2021 RAV4 bulb chart (LED headlights, H11 fogs)](https://www.xenonpro.com/blogs/home/2019-to-2021-toyota-rav4-headlight-bulb-sizes) ## Find your exact RAV4 - [2025](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/2025) - [2024](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/2024) - [2023](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/2023) - [2022](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/2022) - [2021](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/2021) - [2020](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/2020) - [2019](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/2019) - [2018](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/2018) - [2017](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/2017) - [2016](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/2016) - [2015](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/2015) - [2014](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/2014) - [2013](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/2013) More Toyota RAV4 guides: - [Oil & filter](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/oil) - [Battery](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/battery) - [Tires & wheels](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/tires) - [Wiper blades](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/wipers) - [Air & cabin filters](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/filters) - [Bulbs](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/bulbs) - [Brakes](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/brakes) - [Fluids](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/fluids) - [Service schedule](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/service-schedule) - [Oil light reset](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/oil-reset) - [Key fob battery](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/key-fob-battery) - [Specs](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/toyota/rav4/specs) Specifications vary with engine option, production date, and market.
