# 2018-2025 Jeep Wrangler Common Problems and Years to Avoid

5 documented problems with the 2018-2025 Jeep Wrangler, with symptoms, affected years, and typical repair costs. 2 of them are serious. 3 carry a recall or TSB number.

**Quick answer**: We have 5 documented problems on record for the 2018-2025 Jeep Wrangler, of which 2 are serious and 3 carry a recall or service bulletin.

## 2018-2025 Jeep Wrangler recalls and service bulletins

| Recall / TSB | Issue | Severity |
| --- | --- | --- |
| TSB 23-079-23 (steering damper); NHTSA Preliminary Evaluation into 2018-2019 frame welds (no recall issued) | Steering shimmy / "death wobble", frame-weld quality investigation and steering-damper TSB | moderate |
| NHTSA 20V-124 (FCA/Jeep internal number W12) | Manual-transmission clutch pressure plate overheating (recall) | major |
| NHTSA 23V-787 (FCA internal number B9A) | 4xe high-voltage battery internal failure / fire risk (recall) | major |

Recall work is free at a franchised dealer regardless of the vehicle's age, mileage, or how many owners it has had. Check your VIN against the NHTSA database to see what is still outstanding.

## Steering shimmy / "death wobble", frame-weld quality investigation and steering-damper TSB (moderate)

NHTSA opened a Preliminary Evaluation in September 2019 into 2018-2019 JL frame-weld quality (porosity, under/over-penetration) after complaints linking weld defects to steering shimmy; roughly 270,000 vehicles were covered by the investigation, though Jeep never linked death wobble specifically to defective welds and no recall resulted from that investigation. Separately, Jeep issued TSB 23-079-23 addressing steering-wheel shimmy on 2018-2020 JLs built on or before August 11, 2020, with a revised steering damper as the fix. As with the JK, most death-wobble cases trace to a worn track bar, tie rod, ball joints, or steering damper rather than a structural defect.

Most affected: 2018-2020 (TSB); 2018-2019 (NHTSA investigation). Typical cost: Free if covered under warranty/TSB; $200-$800 for track bar/damper/tie-rod replacement out of warranty. Recall/TSB: TSB 23-079-23 (steering damper); NHTSA Preliminary Evaluation into 2018-2019 frame welds (no recall issued).

## Manual-transmission clutch pressure plate overheating (recall) (major)

On 2018-2020 JLs (and 2020 Gladiators) with the 6-speed manual, the clutch pressure plate can overheat through friction and fracture, potentially cracking the transmission case and allowing hot debris to reach an ignition source, a fire risk. Jeep recalled roughly 33,200 vehicles; warning signs include a burnt-clutch smell or abnormal pedal travel before failure. Dealers replace the clutch kit (pressure plate and disc) under the recall at no cost.

Most affected: 2018-2020 (manual transmission only). Typical cost: Free under recall. Recall/TSB: NHTSA 20V-124 (FCA/Jeep internal number W12).

## 4xe high-voltage battery internal failure / fire risk (recall) (major)

Some 2021-2023 Wrangler 4xe PHEVs built with high-voltage battery cells manufactured between January and October 2021 can suffer an internal battery fault leading to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off. Jeep issued a voluntary recall covering about 32,100 vehicles; the remedy is a software flash on the HV battery pack, with a full pack replacement if a fault code sets. Owners of affected VINs were advised to avoid charging and not park the vehicle indoors or near other vehicles until repaired.

Most affected: 2021-2023 (4xe only, specific battery-cell production window). Typical cost: Free under recall. Recall/TSB: NHTSA 23V-787 (FCA internal number B9A).

## 3.6L Pentastar oil cooler / filter housing cracking (moderate)

Same issue as the JK generation: the plastic oil-cooler/filter-housing bolted to the front of the Pentastar V6 can crack and leak oil, especially as the vehicle ages. Watch for oil odor, drips near the front of the engine, or falling oil level between changes.

Most affected: 2018-2025 (3.6L engine). Typical cost: $150-$400 DIY; $400-$900 at a shop.

## 2.0L turbo ("Hurricane 4") oil consumption and timing chain tensioner wear (moderate)

Owners of the 2.0L turbo four report above-normal oil consumption in some cases (attributed to turbo seal/piston ring wear) and premature timing chain tensioner wear producing a rattle on cold start that can worsen into chain noise if ignored. Keep an eye on the dipstick between changes and address any cold-start rattle promptly, a stretched/rattling chain can jump time if left unaddressed.

Most affected: 2018-2025 (2.0L turbo, more reports in early production years). Typical cost: $0 (top-offs) to $1,500-$3,000 for tensioner/chain work.

Problems listed here are compiled from NHTSA complaints, recalls, technical service bulletins, and widely documented owner reports for the 2018-2025 Jeep Wrangler. Not every vehicle will experience these issues.

## Which Jeep Wrangler model years does this cover?

These problems and recalls specifications apply to every Jeep Wrangler built from 2018 through 2025, the JL (3rd generation), off-road suv, solid front/rear axle (2-door; 4-door unlimited). Nothing in this specification changes between those model years.

## What changed during the 2018-2025 Jeep Wrangler

| Years | What changed |
| --- | --- |
| 2018 | JL launch; note that some dealers/titles carried over 'Wrangler JK' badging into 2018 for leftover previous-generation stock, a 2018-titled Wrangler may mechanically be a JK. Confirm by VIN/generation, not just model year. |
| 2019 | eTorque mild hybrid introduced as an option on the 2.0L turbo |
| 2020 | 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 added; eTorque became optional on the 3.6L V6 |
| 2021 | 4xe plug-in hybrid and Rubicon 392 (6.4L V8) both launch |
| 2022 | New High Tide and Beach special editions added; minor equipment shuffling across trims; 4xe becomes the only Wrangler variant offered in Europe |
| 2023 | Air conditioning becomes standard on all trims; Uconnect 4 replaces Uconnect 3 with a 7-in touchscreen standard (up from 5-in); Rubicon 20th Anniversary special edition |
| 2024 | eTorque dropped from the lineup entirely |
| 2025 | 3.6L V6 automatic reportedly phased toward manual-only on some trims as Jeep leans further into the 2.0L turbo and 4xe; verify current-year trim/engine availability before ordering parts |
