Which transmission fluid, coolant, and brake fluid the Jeep Grand Cherokee takes, with capacities and the specifications each one has to meet. Transmission: 8-speed ZF8HP (gas and 4xe): ZF-spec full-synthetic ATF; sealed unit, no dipstick, level set via overflow/temperature check. Coolant: Mopar OAT (orange) coolant; 4xe models have a separate high-voltage battery cooling loop in addition to the engine coolant circuit." url: "https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/fluids" updated: "2026-08-20" --- # Jeep Grand Cherokee Fluid Types and Capacities The specification is not the same across every year we cover, the table below shows exactly where it changes. ## Has the Jeep Grand Cherokee fluids specification changed by year? | Model years | Transmission | Coolant | Brake | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | [2022-2025](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2022-2025/fluids) | 8-speed ZF8HP (gas and 4xe): ZF-spec full-synthetic ATF; sealed unit, no dipstick, level set via overflow/temperature check | Mopar OAT (orange) coolant; 4xe models have a separate high-voltage battery cooling loop in addition to the engine coolant circuit | DOT 3 brake fluid | | [2012-2021](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2012-2021/fluids) | 8-speed ZF8HP (gas V6/V8): ZF-spec full-synthetic ATF (Mopar-branded equivalent, e.g. 68218925AB); sealed unit, no dipstick on most trims, level set via overflow/temperature check | Mopar OAT (orange) coolant, engine-bay reservoir; capacity varies by engine. Confirm on the underhood label | DOT 3 brake fluid | ## Full specifications by generation The fluids on a Jeep Grand Cherokee is set by its generation, not its model year, so each generation has one page carrying the complete figures, part numbers and fitment notes for every year it covers. - [2022-2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee Fluids](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2022-2025/fluids) - [2012-2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Fluids](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2012-2021/fluids) ## Jeep Grand Cherokee fluids: common questions ### What transmission fluid does a Jeep Grand Cherokee take? 8-speed ZF8HP (gas and 4xe): ZF-spec full-synthetic ATF; sealed unit, no dipstick, level set via overflow/temperature check. Transmission fluid specifications are not interchangeable. Friction modifiers differ between them, and the wrong fluid causes shudder long before it causes failure. ### What coolant does a Jeep Grand Cherokee use? Mopar OAT (orange) coolant; 4xe models have a separate high-voltage battery cooling loop in addition to the engine coolant circuit. ### What brake fluid does a Jeep Grand Cherokee take? DOT 3 brake fluid. ## Sources - [Jeep Garage forum, "WL V8 no longer an option in 2 Row Grand Cherokee"](https://www.jeepgarage.org/threads/wl-v8-no-longer-an-option-in-2-row-grand-cherokee.241866/) - [Autoevolution, "2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Drops 5.7L HEMI V8, Grand Cherokee L Still Has It"](https://www.autoevolution.com/news/2023-jeep-grand-cherokee-drops-57l-hemi-v8-grand-cherokee-l-still-has-it-207348.html) - [Car and Driver, 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Hybrid specs](https://www.caranddriver.com/jeep/grand-cherokee-4xe-2022) - [NHTSA press release, Jeep Wrangler/Grand Cherokee 4xe high-voltage battery "park outside" recall](https://www.nhtsa.gov/press-releases/park-outside-recall-jeep-wrangler-phev) - [NHTSA recall 23V-352, steering intermediate shaft](https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2023/RCLRPT-23V352-5968.PDF) - [NHTSA recall 23V-413, rear coil spring detachment](https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2023/RCLRPT-23V413-6565.PDF) - [Jeep Garage forum, WL ESS (Stop/Start) auxiliary battery location thread](https://www.jeepgarage.org/threads/grand-cherokee-wl-ess-stop-start-system-battery-location.245932/) - [Cabral CDJR, How to Change the Battery on a Jeep Grand Cherokee (2025 model, under passenger/driver seat)](https://www.cabralchryslerjeepdodge.com/blog/how-to-change-the-battery-on-a-jeep-grand-cherokee) - [Fontana CDJR, Jeep Grand Cherokee Oil Type & Capacity Guide (2011-2026)](https://www.fontanacdjr.com/service-department/service-and-parts-tips/jeep-grand-cherokee-oil-type/) - [Reddit r/GrandCherokee, 2025 GC losing 5.7/3.6, 4-cyl turbo/4xe only discussion](https://www.reddit.com/r/GrandCherokee/comments/1cexvv9/2025_gc_losing_57_36_engines/) ## Find your exact Grand Cherokee - [2025](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2025) - [2024](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2024) - [2023](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2023) - [2022](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2022) - [2021](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2021) - [2020](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2020) - [2019](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2019) - [2018](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2018) - [2017](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2017) - [2016](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2016) - [2015](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2015) - [2014](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2014) - [2013](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2013) - [2012](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/2012) More Jeep Grand Cherokee guides: - [Oil & filter](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/oil) - [Battery](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/battery) - [Tires & wheels](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/tires) - [Wiper blades](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/wipers) - [Air & cabin filters](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/filters) - [Brakes](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/brakes) - [Service schedule](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/service-schedule) - [Problems & reliability](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/common-problems) - [Oil light reset](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/oil-reset) - [Key fob battery](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/key-fob-battery) - [Specs](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/jeep/grand-cherokee/specs) Specifications vary with engine option, production date, and market.
