# 2020-2025 Hyundai Sonata Oil Type and Capacity

The 2020-2025 Hyundai Sonata takes 0W-20 engine oil, 6.1 quarts with a filter change by engine. Verified against factory documentation, with change intervals and aftermarket filter equivalents.

**Quick answer**: The 2020-2025 Hyundai Sonata (2.5L 4-cylinder (Smartstream G4KN GDI)) takes 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil, 6.1 quarts with a filter change. Other engines differ; see the tables below.

## 2020-2025 Hyundai Sonata 2.5L 4-cylinder (Smartstream G4KN GDI) oil (Verified)

| Spec | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Viscosity | 0W-20 |
| Oil standard | API SP / ILSAC GF-6 |
| Capacity (with filter) | 6.1 qt / 5.8 L |
| Synthetic required | Yes |
| Change interval | 7,500 mi / 6 months (normal); 3,750 mi (severe) |

Note: Verified consistently across multiple 2022-2023 fitment guides.

## 2020-2025 Hyundai Sonata 1.6L Turbo 4-cylinder (Smartstream G1.6 T-GDI) oil (Check your manual)

| Spec | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Viscosity | 0W-20 |
| Allowed alternates | 5W-30 (Reported acceptable alternate for this engine family) |
| Capacity (with filter) | 5.1 qt / 4.8 L |
| Synthetic required | Yes |
| Change interval | 7,500 mi / 6 months (normal); 3,750 mi (severe) |

Note: Offered briefly as the mid-level turbo option before the 2.5T N Line replaced it in the lineup. Confirm the exact year it was dropped in your market.

## 2020-2025 Hyundai Sonata 2.5L Turbo 4-cylinder (Smartstream G2.5 T-GDI, N Line) oil (High confidence)

| Spec | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Viscosity | 0W-30 |
| Allowed alternates | 0W-20 (This is what's printed on the oil fill cap and is widely reported by owners; the owner's manual itself specifies 0W-30 as primary. This cap-vs-manual mismatch is well documented, go by the manual's spec page for your VIN.) |
| Oil standard | API SP |
| Capacity (with filter) | 6.1 qt / 5.8 L |
| Synthetic required | Yes |
| Change interval | 7,500 mi / 6 months (normal); 3,750 mi (severe) |

Note: Multiple independent owner-manual citations converge on 0W-30 as the manual's factory-fill spec despite the 0W-20 cap markings.

## 2020-2025 Hyundai Sonata 1.6L Turbo Hybrid (Smartstream G1.6 T-GDI + electric motor) oil (Check your manual)

| Spec | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Viscosity | 0W-20 |
| Capacity (with filter) | 5.1 qt / 4.8 L |
| Synthetic required | Yes |
| Change interval | 7,500 mi / 6 months (normal); 3,750 mi (severe) |

Note: The Sonata Hybrid uses a turbocharged 1.6L Smartstream engine, not the 2.0L used in the LF-generation hybrid, a distinction some quick-reference guides get wrong. Oil spec assumed to match the non-hybrid 1.6T; not independently confirmed as hybrid-specific this session.

## Which Hyundai Sonata model years does this cover?

These oil specifications apply to every Hyundai Sonata built from 2020 through 2025, the DN8 (8th generation), mid-size sedan. Nothing in this specification changes between those model years.

## 2020-2025 Hyundai Sonata oil: common questions

### How many quarts of oil does a 2020-2025 Hyundai Sonata take?

It depends on the engine. The 2.5L 4-cylinder (Smartstream G4KN GDI) takes 6.1 quarts; The 1.6L Turbo 4-cylinder (Smartstream G1.6 T-GDI) takes 5.1 quarts; The 2.5L Turbo 4-cylinder (Smartstream G2.5 T-GDI, N Line) takes 6.1 quarts; The 1.6L Turbo Hybrid (Smartstream G1.6 T-GDI + electric motor) takes 5.1 quarts, all figures include a new filter.

### What kind of oil does a 2020-2025 Hyundai Sonata take?

0W-20 meeting API SP / ILSAC GF-6, full synthetic (required, not merely recommended). Other engines in this vehicle may differ; see the table above.

### Can you use a different viscosity in a 2020-2025 Hyundai Sonata?

The factory specification is 0W-20 and no alternate grade is listed for this engine. Modern variable-valve-timing hardware is sized around the specified viscosity, so substituting a thicker oil is not a free choice.

### How often does a 2020-2025 Hyundai Sonata need an oil change?

7,500 mi / 6 months (normal); 3,750 mi (severe). Short trips, towing, extended idling, and dusty or very cold conditions all put the vehicle on the severe-service side of that interval.
