Owners are advised to check oil level and condition between changes rather than assume the interval is safe to stretch. No dedicated NHTSA recall covers this as of this review. Most affected: 2020-2024. Typical cost: $0 (monitoring/top-offs) to $4,000+ for engine work if wear becomes severe. ## N Line oil-cap vs. owner's-manual viscosity confusion (minor) The 2.5T N Line's oil fill cap is marked 0W-20, but the owner's manual for this specific powertrain specifies 0W-30 as the factory-fill viscosity, a discrepancy widely discussed among owners and independent shops, some of whom have used the wrong oil as a result. Not a mechanical defect, but a documented source of incorrect oil-change service. Most affected: 2021-2025 (N Line). Typical cost: N/A, verify viscosity against the owner's manual, not the cap, before an oil change. Problems listed here are compiled from NHTSA complaints, recalls, technical service bulletins, and widely documented owner reports for the 2020-2025 Hyundai Sonata. Not every vehicle will experience these issues. ## Which Hyundai Sonata model years does this cover? These problems and recalls specifications apply to every Hyundai Sonata built from 2020 through 2025, the DN8 (8th generation), mid-size sedan. Nothing in this specification changes between those model years. - [2020 Sonata](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2020) - [2021 Sonata](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2021) - [2022 Sonata](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2022) - [2023 Sonata](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2023) - [2024 Sonata](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2024) - [2025 Sonata](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2025) ## What changed during the 2020-2025 Hyundai Sonata | Years | What changed | | --- | --- | | 2020 | Generation launch; 2.5L and 1.6T gas engines, plus Hybrid, at launch | | 2021 | N Line trim introduced with the 2.5T Smartstream engine; 1.6T dropped from most trims | | 2022 | N Line Night Edition appearance package added; panoramic sunroof newly available | | 2023 | SEL trim gains a larger touchscreen infotainment system with navigation; Highway Driving Assist added to the driver-assist suite | | 2024 | Facelift with revised front/rear styling and updated interior tech | ## 2020-2025 Hyundai Sonata problems and recalls: common questions ### What are the most common problems with the 2020-2025 Hyundai Sonata?
