Fitment, replacement notes, and what to check before you buy. **Quick answer**: The 2015-2019 Hyundai Sonata uses a Group 94R (AGM, idle-stop-equipped trims) / 124R (flooded, non-ISG trims) battery. ## 2015-2019 Hyundai Sonata battery specifications (Check your manual) | Spec | Value | | --- | --- | | BCI group size | 94R (AGM, idle-stop-equipped trims) / 124R (flooded, non-ISG trims) | | Battery type | FLOODED | | AGM required | No | | Location | Engine bay, driver side | Note: Trims with Idle Stop & Go (some Eco 1.6T configurations) require an AGM battery; other trims use a conventional flooded battery. Confirm which your trim needs before replacing. Installing flooded on an ISG car will fail prematurely. ## 2.0L Hybrid / Plug-in Hybrid (Nu 2.0L GDI + electric motor) battery (Check your manual) | Spec | Value | | --- | --- | | BCI group size | Compact 12V AGM (auxiliary only), exact BCI group not independently confirmed | | Battery type | AGM | | Location | Trunk, passenger side, behind trim panel | Note: 12V accessory battery only; the high-voltage lithium-ion polymer pack is separate. PHEV adds an onboard charger and larger pack but the same 12V setup. ## Which Hyundai Sonata model years does this cover? These battery specifications apply to every Hyundai Sonata built from 2015 through 2019, the LF (7th generation), mid-size sedan. Nothing in this specification changes between those model years. - [2015 Sonata](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2015) - [2016 Sonata](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2016) - [2017 Sonata](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2017) - [2018 Sonata](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2018) - [2019 Sonata](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2019) ## What changed during the 2015-2019 Hyundai Sonata | Years | What changed | | --- | --- | | 2015 | Generation launch on the LF platform; Eco 1.6T added | | 2016 | Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid trims join the lineup with the Nu 2.0L GDI hybrid powertrain | | 2018 | Mid-cycle facelift arrives; a new mid-range SEL trim is added with Blue Link telematics, SiriusXM, HD Radio, and a power driver's seat standard (base SE and Eco lose those items as standard equipment) | | 2018-2019 | Mid-cycle facelift: new front/rear styling, revised interior with digital instrument cluster option, Eco 1.6T dropped from some markets late in the run | | 2019 | Final model year of the LF generation; facelifted trim lineup and styling carry over unchanged ahead of the all-new DN8 for 2020 | ## 2015-2019 Hyundai Sonata battery: common questions ### What size battery does a 2015-2019 Hyundai Sonata take? BCI group 94R (AGM, idle-stop-equipped trims) / 124R (flooded, non-ISG trims). Group size is a physical dimension and terminal-position standard, so a battery from a different group may not clamp down or may put the terminals on the wrong side. ### Does the 2015-2019 Hyundai Sonata need an AGM battery? The factory battery is a conventional flooded type. AGM is a valid upgrade, but never downgrade from AGM to flooded. ### Where is the battery on a 2015-2019 Hyundai Sonata? Engine bay, driver side. ### Does a 2015-2019 Hyundai Sonata need the battery registered after replacement? Trims with Idle Stop & Go (some Eco 1.6T configurations) require an AGM battery; other trims use a conventional flooded battery. Confirm which your trim needs before replacing. Installing flooded on an ISG car will fail prematurely. ## Sources - [Wikipedia, Hyundai Sonata, seventh generation (LF) production/model-year details](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyundai_Sonata) - [Checkered Flag Hyundai, Sonata oil type/capacity by model year](https://www.checkeredflaghyundaiworld.com/blog/hyundai-sonata-oil-type/) - [Lionheart Tires, Hyundai Sonata factory tire sizes by generation](https://lionharttires.com/hyundai-sonata-tires/) - [YouTube, LF Sonata cabin air filter part number (97133-C...)](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Cpzsf9WLPbI) - [Filterbuy, Sonata cabin air filter location and hybrid part number](https://filterbuy.com/air-filters/cabin/by-vehicle/hyundai/sonata/) - [NHTSA, Hyundai consent order, Nov. 2020 (Theta II engine warranty extension)](https://www.nhtsa.gov/document/hyundaiconsentorder11272020) ## Other Hyundai Sonata generations - [2020-2025 Hyundai Sonata battery](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2020-2025/battery) - [2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata battery](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2011-2014/battery) Or [compare all generations](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/battery). ## More for the 2015-2019 Hyundai Sonata - [Oil & filter](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2015-2019/oil) - [Tires & wheels](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2015-2019/tires) - [Wiper blades](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2015-2019/wipers) - [Air & cabin filters](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2015-2019/filters) - [Bulbs](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2015-2019/bulbs) - [Brakes](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2015-2019/brakes) - [Fluids](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2015-2019/fluids) - [Service schedule](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2015-2019/service-schedule) - [Problems & reliability](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2015-2019/common-problems) - [Oil light reset](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2015-2019/oil-reset) - [Key fob battery](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2015-2019/key-fob-battery) - [Specs](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/hyundai/sonata/2015-2019/specs) Specifications vary with engine option, production date, and market.
