# 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata Common Problems and Years to Avoid

4 documented problems with the 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata, with symptoms, affected years, and typical repair costs. 3 of them are serious. 3 carry a recall or TSB number.

**Quick answer**: We have 4 documented problems on record for the 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata, of which 3 are serious and 3 carry a recall or service bulletin.

## 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata recalls and service bulletins

| Recall / TSB | Issue | Severity |
| --- | --- | --- |
| NHTSA 15V-568 | Theta II connecting-rod bearing failure / engine seizure (recall) | major |
| NHTSA 17V-226; Service Campaign 966 (KSDS); Nov. 2020 NHTSA consent order | Expanded Theta II recall, Knock Sensor Detection System, and lifetime engine warranty | major |
| NHTSA 23V-651000 | ABS module electrical short, engine-bay fire risk (Sonata Hybrid, recall) | major |

Recall work is free at a franchised dealer regardless of the vehicle's age, mileage, or how many owners it has had. Check your VIN against the NHTSA database to see what is still outstanding.

## Theta II connecting-rod bearing failure / engine seizure (recall) (major)

Manufacturing debris left in the crankshaft/connecting-rod oil passages during machining restricted oil flow to the rod bearings on a subset of 2.4L and 2.0L Theta II GDI engines, causing premature bearing wear that progresses to a knocking noise, oil-pressure warning, and, in the worst cases, sudden engine seizure or fire while driving. Hyundai's first recall covered roughly 470,000 model-year 2011-2012 Sonatas; dealers inspected engines and replaced the short block where debris or bearing damage was found.

Most affected: 2011-2012. Typical cost: Free under recall; $4,000-$6,000 for an out-of-warranty short block or engine replacement. Recall/TSB: NHTSA 15V-568.

## Expanded Theta II recall, Knock Sensor Detection System, and lifetime engine warranty (major)

The 2015 recall proved too narrow to catch every affected engine, so Hyundai issued a second, broader Theta II campaign (17V-226) covering more 2011-2014 Sonatas, followed by a Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software update (Service Campaign 966) that continuously monitors engine vibration for the same abnormal rod-bearing wear pattern and warns the driver before a seizure happens. After a November 2020 NHTSA consent order found Hyundai (and Kia) had run untimely recalls and misreported data, Hyundai extended a lifetime engine-replacement warranty to affected owners, but eligibility generally requires the KSDS update to be installed first, and owners report denials when it isn't on file.

Most affected: 2011-2014. Typical cost: Free, KSDS install (Campaign 966), then lifetime short-block/engine coverage if the knock condition is later detected. Recall/TSB: NHTSA 17V-226; Service Campaign 966 (KSDS); Nov. 2020 NHTSA consent order.

## ABS module electrical short, engine-bay fire risk (Sonata Hybrid, recall) (major)

On roughly 83,000 model-year 2011-2015 Sonata Hybrids, the ABS hydraulic control module (HECU) can develop an internal electrical short that increases the risk of an engine-compartment fire, whether the car is being driven, parked, or even turned off. Hyundai told owners to park outside and away from structures until the free dealer repair was completed as part of a wider, multi-nameplate 2023 Hyundai/Kia fire-risk recall.

Most affected: 2011-2015 (Hybrid only). Typical cost: Free under recall. Recall/TSB: NHTSA 23V-651000.

## 2.0T premature cylinder/piston wear (moderate)

Separate from the connecting-rod-bearing recalls above, the turbocharged 2.0T Theta II has its own history of owner-reported premature wear, scored cylinder walls and damaged pistons in a subset of engines, often attributed to fuel washing down the cylinder walls on cold starts and short trips. There is no dedicated NHTSA recall for this pattern, and owners report mixed results getting it covered under the Theta II extended warranty.

Most affected: 2011-2014 (2.0T). Typical cost: $5,000+ for a short block or engine replacement out of warranty.

Problems listed here are compiled from NHTSA complaints, recalls, technical service bulletins, and widely documented owner reports for the 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata. Not every vehicle will experience these issues.

## Which Hyundai Sonata model years does this cover?

These problems and recalls specifications apply to every Hyundai Sonata built from 2011 through 2014, the YF (6th generation), mid-size sedan. Nothing in this specification changes between those model years.

## 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata problems and recalls: common questions

### What are the most common problems with the 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata?

The recurring ones are: theta ii connecting-rod bearing failure / engine seizure (recall); expanded theta ii recall, knock sensor detection system, and lifetime engine warranty; abs module electrical short, engine-bay fire risk (sonata hybrid, recall); 2.0t premature cylinder/piston wear. Each is detailed above with symptoms, affected years, and typical cost.

### Which 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata years should you avoid?

The years to be most careful with are those affected by theta ii connecting-rod bearing failure / engine seizure (recall) (2011-2012) and expanded theta ii recall, knock sensor detection system, and lifetime engine warranty (2011-2014) and abs module electrical short, engine-bay fire risk (sonata hybrid, recall) (2011-2015 (Hybrid only)). A documented problem is not automatically a reason to walk away. Service records showing the repair was done change the picture entirely.

### Are there recalls on the 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata?

3 of the issues listed carry a recall or technical service bulletin: NHTSA 15V-568 (theta ii connecting-rod bearing failure / engine seizure (recall)), NHTSA 17V-226; Service Campaign 966 (KSDS); Nov. 2020 NHTSA consent order (expanded theta ii recall, knock sensor detection system, and lifetime engine warranty), NHTSA 23V-651000 (abs module electrical short, engine-bay fire risk (sonata hybrid, recall)). Recall work is free at a franchised dealer regardless of age or mileage. Check your VIN on the NHTSA site to see what is outstanding.

### How much do 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata repairs typically cost?

Typical figures for the issues above: theta ii connecting-rod bearing failure / engine seizure (recall), Free under recall; $4,000-$6,000 for an out-of-warranty short block or engine replacement; expanded theta ii recall, knock sensor detection system, and lifetime engine warranty, Free, KSDS install (Campaign 966), then lifetime short-block/engine coverage if the knock condition is later detected; abs module electrical short, engine-bay fire risk (sonata hybrid, recall), Free under recall; 2.0t premature cylinder/piston wear, $5,000+ for a short block or engine replacement out of warranty.
