## What changed for the 2023 Honda Pilot

| Years | What changed |
| --- | --- |
| 2023 | Full redesign on a new platform shared with the Passport: J35Y8 V6 (285 hp), 10-speed automatic across the board, new off-road TrailSport trim, all-LED lighting |

## Known problems with the 2023 Honda Pilot

3 of the 3 issues we track for the 2023-2025 generation are documented against the 2023 model year.

### Brake pedal pivot pin defect, recall (major)

Honda recalled roughly 259,000 vehicles, including 2023-2024 Pilot (about 184,000 units) plus related Acura MDX and TLX models, because the brake pedal's pivot pin was not properly secured during assembly. Over time the pin can allow the pedal to shift out of position, potentially reducing or delaying braking. Dealers inspect the pin and secure or replace it as needed, free of charge. This is a straightforward visual check, look at where the brake pedal arm meets its mounting bracket for a pin that isn't sitting flush.

NHTSA 25V-391. Typical cost: Free under recall.

### Infotainment freezes, black screens, and slow/laggy touchscreen response (minor)

The redesigned infotainment system (with Google built-in on upper trims) is a frequent owner complaint: the touchscreen can freeze, go black on startup with a spinning loading icon, lose wireless Android Auto/CarPlay connectivity, or lag noticeably when using navigation and voice commands. Most cases are software-related rather than hardware failures. Honda has released periodic software updates, and a hard reset (holding the power/volume buttons or pulling the relevant fuse) temporarily clears many freezes. Persistent cases warrant a dealer visit to check for the latest head-unit software.

Typical cost: Free (software update); diagnostic/labor charges if a head unit replacement is needed out of warranty.

### A/C blowing warm, condenser and refrigerant leak complaints (moderate)

Some 4th-gen owners report the A/C blowing warm or losing cold air, traced in reported cases to a damaged or leaking condenser (the condenser sits low and forward in the bumper, exposed to road debris) or a broader system leak. As with the 3rd generation, this generation doesn't have an acknowledged factory defect for A/C, treat individual failures as component wear/damage and get a UV-dye leak check before replacing parts on assumption.

Typical cost: $400-$900 for a condenser replacement and recharge.

## Which engines were offered in the 2023 Pilot?

| Engine | Trims | Oil | Oil capacity |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 3.5L V6 (J35Y8, DOHC, non-VTEC) | All trims 2023-2025; 10-speed automatic | 0W-20 | 5.8 qt |

## About the Honda Pilot

5L V6 across every model year in this file. The 2nd generation (2009-2015, covered here from 2012) uses the port-injected J35Z4 with i-VTEC and Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) cylinder deactivation and a 5-speed automatic, VCM's oil-consumption and piston-ring wear problems became infamous enough that Honda settled a class action extending powertrain warranty coverage, and the same engine family fouls spark plugs and throws misfire codes when it happens. The 3rd generation (2016-2022) jumped to 280 hp with the J35Y6, split between a conventional 6-speed automatic (LX, EX) and a ZF-sourced 9-speed automatic (EX-L, Touring, Elite) that earned a reputation for harsh shifting and torque-converter judder addressed by several Honda TSBs, plus a 2026 recall for rear subframe corrosion and two separate fuel-pump recall campaigns.

The 4th generation (2023-2025) switched to the non-VTEC, DOHC J35Y8 (285 hp) mated to a new 10-speed automatic, added the off-road TrailSport trim, and introduced its own headaches, infotainment freezes and a 2025 brake-pedal-pivot-pin recall. Across the range: 0W-20 full synthetic oil, the same 15400-PLM-A02 spin-on filter, a 94 ft-lb lug torque (higher than most Honda cars), and Honda's Maintenance Minder governing service timing instead of a fixed mileage chart. Towing tops out at 5,000 lbs on AWD/i-VTM4 trims, the Pilot's main draw as a family tow vehicle, versus 3,500 lbs on FWD.
