# 2016-2022 Honda Pilot Battery Size (BCI Group and CCA)

The 2016-2022 Honda Pilot uses a BCI group 35 battery rated at 600 cold cranking amps. Fitment, replacement notes, and what to check before you buy.

**Quick answer**: The 2016-2022 Honda Pilot uses a Group 35 battery, 600 CCA.

## 2016-2022 Honda Pilot battery specifications (High confidence)

| Spec | Value |
| --- | --- |
| BCI group size | 35 |
| Cold cranking amps | 600 CCA |
| Battery type | FLOODED |
| AGM required | No |
| Location | Engine bay, driver side |

Note: Group 35 flooded battery is correct for LX/EX (6-speed) and pre-2019 EX-L/Touring/Elite without idle-stop. 2019+ idle-stop trims require an AGM Group 48/H6 battery. See the 9-speed engine entry.

## 3.5L V6 (J35Y6, direct injection), 9-speed automatic (ZF-sourced) battery (High confidence)

| Spec | Value |
| --- | --- |
| BCI group size | 48 (H6) |
| Battery type | AGM |
| Location | Engine bay, driver side |

Note: 2019+ EX-L/Touring/Elite trims added idle-stop (auto start-stop), which requires the AGM Group 48/H6 battery. Do not fit a cheaper flooded battery on these, the start-stop system needs AGM's deeper cycling tolerance. 2016-2018 9-speed trims without idle-stop can use the same flooded Group 35 as the 6-speed models.

## Which Honda Pilot model years does this cover?

These battery specifications apply to every Honda Pilot built from 2016 through 2022, the 3rd generation (YF5/YF6), 3-row mid-size suv (fwd or i-vtm4 awd). Nothing in this specification changes between those model years.

## What changed during the 2016-2022 Honda Pilot

| Years | What changed |
| --- | --- |
| 2016 | Full redesign: J35Y6 V6 (280 hp), 6-speed standard on LX/EX, new 9-speed on EX-L/Touring/Elite, Honda Sensing available |
| 2017 | Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration added |
| 2018 | Carries over unchanged |
| 2019 | Mid-cycle refresh: revised styling, idle-stop (auto start-stop) added to 9-speed trims (requires AGM battery), Honda Sensing standard across the lineup |
| 2020 | Black Edition trim added, with exclusive exterior and interior styling |
| 2022 | Final year of the 3rd generation; Special Edition trim on 18-in wheels |

## 2016-2022 Honda Pilot battery: common questions

### What size battery does a 2016-2022 Honda Pilot take?

BCI group 35, rated at 600 cold cranking amps from the factory. Group size is a physical dimension and terminal-position standard, so a battery from a different group may not clamp down or may put the terminals on the wrong side.

### How many CCA does a 2016-2022 Honda Pilot need?

At least 600 CCA. Going higher is harmless and helps in cold climates; going lower is how a vehicle that started fine in October stops starting in January.

### Does the 2016-2022 Honda Pilot need an AGM battery?

The factory battery is a conventional flooded type. AGM is a valid upgrade, but never downgrade from AGM to flooded.

### Where is the battery on a 2016-2022 Honda Pilot?

Engine bay, driver side.

### Does a 2016-2022 Honda Pilot need the battery registered after replacement?

Group 35 flooded battery is correct for LX/EX (6-speed) and pre-2019 EX-L/Touring/Elite without idle-stop. 2019+ idle-stop trims require an AGM Group 48/H6 battery. See the 9-speed engine entry.
