It depends on the engine. The 2.7L Turbo I4 (L3B; 'TurboMax' from 2023) takes 6 quarts; The 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 (L84, DFM) takes 8 quarts; The 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 (L87, DFM) takes 8 quarts; The 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel I6 (LM2; LZ0 from 2023) takes 7 quarts, all figures include a new filter. ### What kind of oil does a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 take? 5W-30 meeting dexos1 Gen 3, full synthetic (required, not merely recommended). Other engines in this vehicle may differ; see the table above. ### Can you use a different viscosity in a Chevrolet Silverado 1500? The factory specification is 5W-30 and no alternate grade is listed for this engine. Modern variable-valve-timing hardware is sized around the specified viscosity, so substituting a thicker oil is not a free choice. ### How often does a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 need an oil change? Per Oil Life Monitor, max 12 months. Short trips, towing, extended idling, and dusty or very cold conditions all put the vehicle on the severe-service side of that interval. ### What oil filter does a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 take? The OEM filter is ACDelco PF66. ## Sources - [GM TechLink, official 2019/2020 engine oil capacity chart (all T1XX engines)](https://gm-techlink.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/TechLink-engine-oil-capacities-2019-2020_C.pdf) - [NHTSA Part 573 report, recall 25V-274, 6.2L L87 engine failure](https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2025/RCLRPT-25V274-1598.PDF) - [GM Authority, Silverado/Sierra 6.2L L87 recall coverage](https://gmauthority.com/blog/2025/04/chevy-silverado-gmc-sierra-recalled-for-6-2l-v8-engine-loss-of-propulsion/) - [Blauparts, 2020-2025 Silverado 3.0L LM2/LZ0 oil change kit (dexosD 0W-20)](https://www.blauparts.com/chevrolet-silverado-1500-oil-change-kit-3-0l-lm2-lz0-duramax-diesel-0w20-dexosd.html) - [Duramax Forum, LM2 oil pump belt 150,000-mi service](https://www.duramaxforum.com/threads/oil-pump-belt-on-lm2.1016808/) - [Costa Oils, 2020 Silverado 2.7L (L3B) oil change guide (PF66)](https://costaoils.com/2020-chevrolet-silverado-1500-pickup-2-7l-oil-change-guide/) - [AutoZone, 2020 Silverado 1500 battery fitment (Group 48/H6, AGM)](https://www.autozone.com/batteries-starting-and-charging/battery/chevrolet/silverado-1500/2020) - [Goodyear, 2019 Silverado Custom Trail Boss OE tire (LT275/65R18)](https://www.goodyear.com/en_US/vehicle-search/Chevrolet_Silverado-1500_2019_Custom-Trail-Boss_256968-S-161259) - [Wheel-Size.com, 2019 Silverado 1500 OE fitments](https://www.wheel-size.com/size/chevrolet/silverado-1500/2019/) - [XenonPro, 2019-2021 Silverado bulb size chart (H11 low / 9005 high, halogen trims)](https://www.xenonpro.com/blogs/home/2019-to-2021-chevy-silverado-1500-headlight-bulb-sizes) - [Cox Chevrolet, Silverado 1500 towing capacity by engine/year](https://www.coxchevy.com/manufacturer-information/chevrolet-silverado-1500-towing-capacity/) ## Find your exact Silverado 1500 - [2025](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/2025) - [2024](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/2024) - [2023](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/2023) - [2022](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/2022) - [2021](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/2021) - [2020](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/2020) - [2019](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/2019) - [2018](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/2018) - [2017](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/2017) - [2016](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/2016) - [2015](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/2015) - [2014](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/2014) - [2013](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/2013) - [2012](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/2012) More Chevrolet Silverado 1500 guides: - [Battery](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/battery) - [Tires & wheels](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/tires) - [Wiper blades](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/wipers) - [Air & cabin filters](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/filters) - [Bulbs](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/bulbs) - [Fluids](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/fluids) - [Service schedule](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/service-schedule) - [Problems & reliability](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/common-problems) - [Oil light reset](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/oil-reset) - [Key fob battery](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/key-fob-battery) - [Specs](https://whichcarparts.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado-1500/specs) Specifications vary with engine option, production date, and market.
