## What changed for the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

| Years | What changed |
| --- | --- |
| 2020 | 3.0L Duramax LM2 diesel arrives; 6.2L/diesel use the 10L80 10-speed |

## Known problems with the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

4 of the 6 issues we track for the 2019-2025 generation are documented against the 2020 model year.

### DFM lifter failure (5.3L and 6.2L) (major)

Dynamic Fuel Management lifters collapse just like their AFM ancestors: sudden loud tick, flashing check-engine light, misfire on a deactivation cylinder, and possible cam damage. Heaviest complaint volume is 2019-2021; 2021-2023 6.2Ls also had a batch of blocks with oversized lifter bores that GM replaced whole engines for. Out of warranty, a lifter/cam job runs thousands, many buyers check for this before purchase.

Typical cost: Free under 5-yr/60k powertrain warranty; $2,500-$5,500 (lifters/cam) or $8,000+ (engine) after.

### 8-speed/10-speed torque-converter shudder (moderate)

8L90-equipped trucks carry the same highway shudder issue as the K2XX; the fix is a flush with Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP per TSB 18-NA-355 (converters replaced when it persists). The 10L80 is much less shudder-prone but has its own harsh 1-2 shift complaints addressed by software TSBs.

TSB 18-NA-355 (8L45/8L90 shudder). Typical cost: $300-$500 fluid exchange; free reflash under warranty.

### 3.0L Duramax high-pressure fuel pump failure / long crank (major)

A minority of LM2 diesels suffer high-pressure fuel pump failures that shed metal through the injection system, a multi-thousand-dollar fuel-system rebuild, and a wider group had long-crank/no-start complaints traced to fuel-system and control-module issues (several TSBs). Buy fuel from busy stations, never run the tank near empty, and fix long-crank symptoms promptly. Distinct from the routine 150k oil-pump-belt service.

Typical cost: Free under 5-yr/100k diesel powertrain warranty; $8,000-$12,000 fuel-system rebuild out of warranty.

### Duramax oil-pump belt service everyone forgets (moderate)

The 3.0L Duramax drives its oil pump with a wet belt at the back of the engine, and GM schedules replacement at 150,000 miles (LM2), a job that requires removing the transmission, typically $1,500-$3,000. The 2023+ LZ0 stretched the interval to 200,000 miles. Not a defect, but a real ownership cost that surprises high-mileage buyers.

Typical cost: $1,500-$3,000 at 150k/200k miles.

2 more issues are reported in other 2019-2025 years: 6.2L L87 crankshaft/rod-bearing failure, major recall (2021-2024 (6.2L L87, built Mar 2021-May 2024)); Infotainment freezes and screen blackouts (2022+ refresh) (2022-2023).

## Which engines were offered in the 2020 Silverado 1500?

| Engine | Trims | Oil | Oil capacity |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 2.7L Turbo I4 (L3B; 'TurboMax' from 2023) | WT, Custom, LT, RST (base engine) | 5W-30 | 6 qt |
| 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 (L84, DFM) | LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ (volume engine) | 0W-20 | 8 qt |
| 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 (L87, DFM) | RST, LTZ, High Country, ZR2 (optional) | 0W-20 | 8 qt |
| 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel I6 (LM2; LZ0 from 2023) | LT, RST, LTZ, High Country (optional; 2020+) | 0W-20 (dexosD) | 7 qt |

## About the Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is GM's full-size half-ton pickup and one of the three best-selling vehicles in America, and the 2012-2025 span covers three distinct trucks. 2L V8s on 5W-30 with 6-quart sumps and cheap PF48 filters. 3L.

The K2XX (2014-2018, plus the carryover 2019 'Silverado LD') brought direct-injected EcoTec3 engines with 8-quart V8 sumps, and added the 8L90 8-speed whose torque-converter shudder spawned TSB 18-NA-355 and a class action. 2L V8s for crankshaft/rod-bearing defects. 7 with 140 lb-ft lug torque, both wiper blades are 22 inches, the battery is a Group 48 (H6), and the key fob takes a CR2032.

Owners look things up constantly because specs genuinely changed: oil went from 6 qt of 5W-30 to 8 qt of 0W-20 on the V8s in 2014, the diesel takes dexosD-spec oil, and fuel tank and towing figures vary by cab, box, and axle.
